This amazing piece is created using an Oil paints by

Amy M. Dixon

from St. Louis, Missouri

Amy graduated High School in May of 2005.

Theme: When I think of space, what comes to mind first is the vastness of the universe. In my oil painting, "Futuristic Galaxy", I wanted to portray that sense of the unexplored. I began by painting the background in an impressionistic style. Next, I began the planet which resembles our moon. By gathering numerous photos that have been taken of the moon orbiting earth, I was able to study the effects of lighting from the sun on a cratered, spherical surface. I undertook this endeavor with no prior instruction on painting this subject, and worked first to create the depth of the craters, then to create the depth of the sphere. Lastly, I worked on the spaceship. Next, I created my own unique starship. I received input from my sister, who is studying to be an aerospace engineer. After drawing out a prototype, I made a three dimensional version out of clay, so that by shining a light on it, I was able to create the same light source as was on my planet. Thus, while working on one art project, I began and completed another. It was extremely difficult to create consistency between the perspectives and the light source. In "Futuristic Galaxy," I wanted to portray the direction the space program may be headed, as we invent more advanced spaceships and explore new galaxies. I truly enjoyed this experience, as it was a new and interesting subject I had not yet explored in the art world.

Biography: My main areas of strength and enjoyment are in Music, Art, English, and Equestrian. I have recently stated my desire to double major in Studio Art and Vocal Performance, and minor in Piano. Nevertheless, as with many first year college students, I am certain my priorities and interests will be altered.

Although I am unsure of my particular career choice at this point in time, I have many goals for my professional and personal life. As a professional, I seek to be an upstanding citizen. I will strive to be a participating member of my community by being involved in service projects, voting, and keeping up with my ability to stay informed. My standards are high, and my work will be my best. I wish to be well-liked by my employer and seen as a hardworking, honest employee. I will put my best, most complete and wholehearted work into every task set before me. I shall put forth every effort to respect others, be committed, and work willingly. Personally, I also have goals for myself. I seek to gratify the desires of others, rather than myself. I am willing to out of my way to help others succeed. Also, I have moral standards which I adhere to. All in all, I will fulfill my duties as a human being, honoring my God, my country, and other people to the best of my ability.
